Does anyone know of a firm in San Antonio or surrounding areas that can
recover data from a bad hard drive?
The drive in question is from an old DEC Alpha server.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,
Chris

I don't know of any local. I have had good luck with Drive Savers. http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/ they are in Novato, Ca. Not cheap, but they saved me once in the past.

The drive in question is from an old DEC Alpha server.
Quick overview for the list: Data recovery can involve capturing data
from a failed filesystem on an otherwise working drive, replacing
electronic components to repair a damaged drive, or rebuilding the
internal moving parts in a *very* clean environment. All of these
require special knowledge and tools, but the last two also require parts
and training for 'obsolete' drives that aren't well supported by the
manufacturer any more. Somewhat like the difference between an oil
change and a full restoration of a 1940 Hudson. A qualifying question
might be "do they have (make and model of your drive) in stock for
parts" or "what kind of DEC servers have they fixed?"

There are several nearby firms that offer various forms of data
recovery, but I haven't used any so far. Overnight shipment to Ontrack
might be a better option. If you really want local...

Try Global Data Finders.
210-377-2100
They changed location to a more secured location so if the phone does not
work try 1-866-791-2100

I've DIY before by swapping drive electronics, freezing the drive,
and hitting it sharply if it suffers from "stiction".

If you don't feel like paying, these sometimes work, and there's also
a book out there called "200 ways to recover a dead drive" that has
more tips.
