I am fairly new to blogging myslef. Maybe my old lady will chime in when she
checks her email... but I have been using wordpress.com and it is super
easy! You can also install wordpress on your own server if you'd like.

The two major blogging platforms out there are word press and blogger.
Wordpress has both a hosted (free) version and one which you download (for
free) and install on your own web server. Blogger is a Google service and
can tie in with your Gmail or other Google services. Unless you want total
control over every little aspect of the blog, the free versions of both word
press and blogger are great. I use Blogger for several of my blogs, and I
am very happy with it. It is quite fast, free and Google has built many
enhancements into it of late. If you want to track your blog with Googly
Analytics (urchin) or some other tracking system, Blogger does allow
javascript whereas word press does not. Adsense is also a one click install
on all blog pages with Blogger. Simply put, I would recommend Blogger
overall. You can see my tech blog at http://smbtechadvice.com

There are many blogging engines in the wild. It sorta depends on how you
want to get into blogging. Do you want a hosted solution? Do you want to
run it on your own server? What scripting languages are you comfortable
with? If Ruby and you want to run it on your won server, then Mephisto
and Typo are the two you should look at. If PHP is more your thing, then
Wordpress is the way to go. There are also Python based engines you
could use if that's you bent.

What kind of blogging are you going to do?

Mephisto is awesome, and I'm not just saying that cause my friend Rick co
authored it. Seriously, he's not paying me for this advertisement with past
payments of Mac mini's...

I'm comfortable with php and I am thinking of blogging about how many times
people use the letter "E" when they speak.

Okay just kidding...about the php part. I'm thinking about blooging on
Electronic music in general but at times and most often about House Music.

I use wordpress, the only problem with it is it gets lit up a lot. It's like
microsoft versus linux in the sense that Wordpress is microsoft, and
everyone uses it. Naturally this brings us to a point where security
researchers are constantly banging on it. This then becomes two fold:

First: It Makes newer versions secure
Secondly: If you are hosting your own server, and are running wordpress you
have to constantly monitor it to ensure its updated. Fortunately, my hosting
company takes care of that for me!

Blogging is alright, I do R&D&D (the last D is for distruction) and I'd say
67% of the sites I end up on are blogs. I've taken my blog to that route
where I discuss technical items whenever I post. This of course brings me to
two points about blogging. Number 1: Blogging is difficult to do, I say this
because I lack motivation to constantly write something. I've found myself
going two months or more without making a post. Time conciousness aside, Ive
managed to obtain a small following.
Number 2: Handling multiple blogs (technical and personal) is even harder to
do. I've also found that unless you have a very interesting life, or enjoy
ranting about poor drivers and can do it in a comical fashion no one will
read it! There are so many abandoned blogs out there, so make sure if you
start one up that you have something to write about, and the
persistence/will power to contribute to it.

I've set myself milestones and or research items which I post to the blog.
This in turns keeps me accountable for both my continued education and for
constantly blogging.

I'll second, third, fourth, whatever with blogger...I love the service, and
the added functionality....my biggest gripe about wordpress is that you
can't embed javascript in the free one, so you have to pay for a host to do
that.

If you've got the server space, I highly recommend going with
WordPress. But yeah, if you're looking at the free versions, Blogger
is probably a better choice than WordPress.com

I use WordPress.com myself both for our company blogs and my personal blog (
http://kylistah.wordpress.com), haven't looked into Blogger but I'm
constantly hearing good reviews about it. WordPress is user friendly, but a
little limited..recommended for a first time blogger.

I have the capabilities to host my own blog...but I think I'd rather try a
free service first. I would prefer to spend more time blogging about things
I like than blogging about patching and maintaining my blog site.

I do want to throw in that aside from installing WordPress and adding
the plugins I like (optional), I have not had any problems maintaning
it. I should say, I have not had to do any maintenance at all on it.
Now maybe I got lucky, but for me it justs works.
